Maintenance

Wear and tear: what a policy does not pay for

Insurance responds to sudden events. It generally does not pay for a car getting older.

Maintenance versus damage

Oil changes, brake pads and tires wear out over time. A collision, a break-in or hail is a sudden event. Policies are written around the second kind.

Typical exclusions

  • Wear and tear from ordinary use.
  • Mechanical breakdown without an outside cause.
  • Damage from poor maintenance.

Other protection that may exist

A manufacturer or extended warranty, and some service contracts, cover certain breakdowns. They are separate from insurance and have their own rules.

Keep a simple log

A folder or phone note with dates and receipts is enough. Include any warning-light work.
